After the very disappointing 1993 vintage, this year came as a relief to growers. In South Australia the mild weather resulted in a long ripening season with many growers harvesting 2 weeks later than usual. The reds are of uniformly high quality with the best examples possessing excellent ageing potential. The whites are more variable in quality and should have all been consumed by now.
In Victoria yields were down but the quality is generally very high. There was a period of cold weather during the summer which disrupted the ripening process. However, many areas experienced an Indian summer and this resulted in healthy and ripe grapes being harvested.
Western Australia witnessed one of the driest growing seasons on record and some splendid Margaret River reds were produced.
