Berry Bros & Rudd

2003 South Africa

Rating: 10, Maturity: W

2003 is considered as the best vintage in the South African wine history.

Weather conditions were favourable from planting right through to harvesting. The grapes could ripen slowly on the vine and develop optimum ripeness, with ideal sugar levels, refreshing acidity and well-defined varietal flavours. Relatively little input was required from producers and some have described it as "almost an organic" year. Production was also up by 12% on 2002 vintage.

Reds are sublime, robustly-structured, lush in fruitiness, yet with excellent flavour definition and well integrated tannins. The whites are also successful across the board, from the early ripening Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, to the late-ripening Chardonnay.
