Maturity:
A vintage of very low quantities and variable quality throughout Portugal.
The weather was unsettled throughout much of the growing season, with rain and
cool temperatures in May and June giving way to drought-like conditions in
August. In Alentejo and Setúbal the extraordinarily hot August
weather led to the harvest beginning early and most of the grapes were picked
by the middle of September. The wines display very good depth of fruit and the
quality is remarkably consistent. Other regions such as the Douro did
not fare so well, as it rained solidly in the latter half of September severely
disrupting the harvest and resulting in a small crop of mostly thin and dilute
wines being produced.
