Berry Bros & Rudd

1990 Alsace

Rating: 10, Maturity: W

An exceptional vintage that produced a large crop of rich, harmonious and complex wines. The summer was gloriously hot and dry and was followed by an atypical September, which saw a strange combination of sunshine, fog and rain. The harvest commenced on October 4th and took place in ideal weather conditions.

The year will be remembered for the extraordinary quality of the Rieslings, which are aromatically rich and display admirable complexity and length. The Vendages Tardives are powerful and remarkably well balanced, although the lack of botrytis in the vineyards meant that no SGN wines were made this year. Arguably the greatest Alsace vintage since 1961.
