Berry Bros & Rudd

1985 White Burgundy

Rating: 8, Maturity: W

A very successful vintage for White Burgundies, which produced a below average-size crop of well-structured and sophisticated wines. The winter was particularly savage (temperatures fell to as low as minus 25 degrees centigrade) with the vineyards being badly damaged by frosts. Spring and summer were fairly uneventful but the vintage was made by the unusually warm September and October. The Louis Latour Vintage Report described the autumn weather as "constant sunshine and soft nights more remindful of the Riviera than Burgundy".

In youth the wines were discreetly fruit-driven and exuded marvellous poise and balance. They have aged marvellously and are and arguably the finest White Burgundies of the decade.
