In 2001, the general consensus among growers was that the key to success in
this challenging year was the work in the vineyard. Despite some challenging
weather conditions, growers who removed damaged berries after the hailstorms
and subsequently delayed harvesting until the vine had recovered were able to
pick ripe, healthy grapes. 2001 is a vintage in which it is essential to be
highly selective.

2001 Red Burgundy
The ratio of juice to pulp is lower than in 2000, resulting in a higher
degree of intensity of fruit within the wines; the expression of terroir is
more pronounced as a result, with a clear distinction between the different
villages and between the individual vineyard sites within those villages.
Tannins are present, but they are ripe and certainly not aggressive. The
perception of acidity is also such that the wines appear beautifully balanced,
and have the potential to age well in the medium term. Above all, the quality
of fruit in the best wines is immensely pure. Nuits-St. Georges,
Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny have been very successful.
Amongst the best growers, 2001 is a truly fascinating vintage; it allows the
skills of the winemaker to fully express themselves, and ruthlessly exposes
those who are less dedicated. Above all, 2001 is a winemaker's vintage, and one
which emphasises the individual terroirs of each appellation.
