An exceptional vintage for Red Burgundy. March was unusually warm and was followed by a colder than average April. May and June were equally cool and were then followed by almost drought conditions throughout July and August. A storm at the end of August bought welcome relief to the vines, with the grapes being harvested under ideal weather conditions in September.
Yields were on the high side but the hot, dry summer produced small, concentrated berries and consequently deeply coloured and intensely flavoured wines were produced. They are very well-balanced and display more finesse than the seductive 1989s. Many of the wines are drinking superbly now but the very top ones are still some way off their peak. Arguably the best Red Burgundy vintage since 1949.
