Berry Bros & Rudd

1989 Red Burgundy

Rating: 9, Maturity: W

A very successful year for Red Burgundy, producing a large crop of plump, fleshy and opulent wines which have aged remarkably well. April was cold and wet and May saw some instances of frost and a particularly vicious hailstorm on the 25th. June was fairly cool, with the summer beginning in earnest in July, with hot and dry weather continuing through to mid September.

The grapes were harvested with high sugar levels, although there were concerns that the acidity levels were on the low side and that the wines would consequently lack structure and longevity. 11 years later the wines are still rich in fruit and are harmonious, well balanced and delicious to drink now. The very top wines should keep for another decade or so.
