2003 is a vintage of contrasts for red wines and in Sauternes and Barsac, the story of huge quality variation is repeated. Many wines are incredibly sweet but lack the beautiful balance of fresh acidity so prevalent in the glorious 2001s.
However, the estates that have got it right have really struck liquid gold, with fabulous wines rivalling the great 2001, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1983, 1976 and 1967 vintages. Among the stars here are Ch. Rieussec, Ch. Suduiraut and Ch. Doisy-Védrines.
