This vintage came as a welcome relief to the Champenois after the previous
four vintages, which had been difficult, to say the least. Growing conditions
were good throughout the summer, although there was some rain in September
causing some rot to develop. The grapes were harvested in the second half of
September and during October in predominantly dry weather. This was the first
universally declared vintage since 1990 and many
excellent Champagnes have been produced. At this stage the Champagnes are
similar in character to the 1988s, with
the best examples possessing marvellous ageing potential.
