A year that promised greatness but, as in 1993, pre-harvest rains dashed growers` hopes. July and August saw close to ideal weather with higher than average temperatures and very little rainfall. However, heavy rains hit the region at the beginning of September and this caused both rot and dilution in the grapes. Those who harvested late and made very careful grape selections have produced the best Champagnes.
