Berry Bros & Rudd

Argentinian
The outstanding potential of Argentinian wines has been widely acknowledged for several years, but progress there has seemed rather sluggish. The rain and hail in 1998, courtesy of El Niņo, meant that, with some honourable exceptions, the wines were disappointing. However, the excellent 1999 vintage has restored faith in Argentina, as the depth of quality continues to increase.

Mendoza is still the predominant region and produces 75% of the country`s total wine output. The region is virtually a desert but has access to a plentiful supply of water, courtesy of the Andes Mountains. The reds, and in particular the Malbecs, are the most impressive, but the whites are fast improving. The next Australia? Only time will tell.
